As part of my Venice day trip series, I took the early morning ferry to Burano, one of the most charming islands in the Venetian Lagoon. The boat ride from Venice took about 45 minutes, offering peaceful views of the water and smaller nearby islands. It’s an easy and relaxing escape from the busy streets of Venice.

Stepping off the ferry, Burano, Italy greeted me with bold, colorful houses lined up along quiet canals. Every street looked like a postcard. From pastel pinks to deep blues, the homes here are painted in bright colors, making Burano one of the most photogenic places in the region.

I spent the morning walking through the narrow streets, taking photos and enjoying the quiet vibe. It’s a small island, so everything is within walking distance. I visited a local lace shop—Burano is famous for handmade lace—and watched an elderly woman demonstrate the craft. It’s a tradition passed down through generations.

For lunch, I stopped at a small canal-side restaurant and tried risotto di gò, a traditional dish made with a local fish found in the lagoon. Paired with a glass of white wine, it was the perfect mid-day break.

If you're planning a day trip from Venice, Burano should be at the top of your list. Between the colorful houses, friendly locals, and delicious food, this island offers a relaxing change of pace and a beautiful spot to explore in just a few hours.

Next in this Venice day trip series: a stop in Murano, the island famous for glassmaking!
