A Day Trip to Matera: Discovering a Hidden Gem in Southern Italy

On our trip through Puglia, we decided to take a little adventure inland and visit Matera, one of the most unique and fascinating places in Southern Italy. We started the day in Monopoli, our home base on the coast, and from there we hopped on a motorbike for the one-hour ride to Matera. The drive itself was beautiful—rolling hills, olive groves, and stretches of golden countryside that felt like a postcard come to life.

When we finally arrived, our first stop was breakfast. We found a tiny café tucked in a quiet corner of the city and sat down for a simple Italian start to the day: buttery croissants and strong espresso. There’s something about having breakfast in Italy that feels extra special—it’s slow, relaxed, and makes you feel like a local for a moment.

With coffee fueling us, we started walking through the ancient streets of Matera. The city is famous for the Sassi di Matera, the cave dwellings carved into limestone rock that people once called home. Walking through the stone alleys felt like stepping into another century. The narrow staircases, winding paths, and sunlit courtyards made us want to explore every corner.

One of the highlights of our visit was the Sassi Cave Museum (Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario). Stepping inside, we got a real glimpse of what life was like for families who lived in caves. The rooms were furnished with original tools, furniture, and even areas for animals. It felt like a time capsule—humbling and fascinating at the same time. Standing there, we could almost imagine the daily rhythm of life centuries ago.

As we continued wandering, we climbed countless stairs that seemed to twist endlessly through the city. Every time we reached the top, we were rewarded with incredible views. From up high, Matera looked like a stone masterpiece, with houses stacked on top of each other and the ravine cutting dramatically into the landscape. The panoramic views alone made the trip worth it.

We also stumbled upon a few of the rock-hewn churches of Matera, carved directly into the stone. Some still have centuries-old frescoes on the walls, and walking through them gave us chills—it’s history you can actually touch.

What struck us most about Matera was the atmosphere. Unlike the busier tourist destinations in Italy, Matera felt authentic and peaceful. The sound of footsteps on stone, church bells echoing in the distance, and the chatter of locals going about their day gave the city a unique rhythm.

By the end of the day, we were tired from all the walking (and climbing!), but completely enchanted. Visiting Matera felt less like a tourist stop and more like uncovering a secret.
