Burano, Italy: The Most Colourful Island You'll Ever Set Eyes On

Okay, I need you to stop whatever you're doing because I have to talk about Burano.

You know how sometimes a place looks so good in photos that you're convinced it's edited? That was me before I visited. But standing there in person, surrounded by hot pink, electric blue, and sunshine yellow houses reflecting off the canal water? I nearly cried. No shame.

Burano is a tiny island with around 3,000 people, just seven kilometres outside of Venice and it is hands down one of the most photogenic places on earth. Every single street looks like a painting. Every corner is a photo. You will run out of storage.

Fun facts you'll love:

  • Fishermen started painting their homes different colours so they could find their way home after a long day at sea. Honestly, genius.

  • If you want to repaint your house in Burano, you actually need government approval to make sure it doesn't clash with your neighbour's colour. The most Italian rule ever.

  • The iconic Casa di Bepi Suà — Burano's most photographed house covered in bold geometric shapes — was actually painted by a local candy seller named Bepi who used to screen movies on its walls for neighbourhood kids.

  • Burano's famous lace-making tradition started with a legend about a fisherman who resisted a siren's song out of love for his girl back home — and the siren queen rewarded him by turning sea foam into a stunning lace wedding veil.

Getting there from Venice — so easy:

Take Line 12 from Fondamente Nove in Venice. It's a 45-minute vaporetto ride and tickets cost €7.50, or grab a 24-hour pass for €20 if you're island-hopping. The boat also stops at Murano on the way.

What to eat — please don't skip this part:

  • Try the risotto de gò — rice cooked in broth made from a local lagoon fish called goby. It's the most Burano thing you can eat and it's absolutely worth it.

  • Trattoria da Romano — Anthony Bourdain ate here. That's all you need to know. Famous for seafood risotto.

  • Trattoria al Gatto Nero — family-run, locally sourced, heartily endorsed by Jamie Oliver. Book ahead because there's almost always a queue.

  • Before you leave, grab an essi or bussolà — Burano's local cookies, shaped like an S or a donut ring, sweeter than biscotti and absolutely addictive.

Nearby places to see:

  • Murano — famous for glass-blowing since the 13th century. You can watch artisans work right in front of you.

  • Torcello — home to a cathedral dating back to 639 AD and stunning Byzantine mosaics. History lovers, this one's for you.

  • Mazzorbo — the little island right next to Burano connected by a footbridge, home to a Michelin-starred restaurant called Venissa set inside an actual vineyard.

Burano is the kind of place that makes you fall in love with travel all over again. It's small, it's silly colourful, and it's completely unforgettable. If Italy is on your radar, this is non-negotiable.
