Okay, so I need to tell you about this place because I genuinely could not believe it existed.
Tucked away in the heart of Romania, just 40km from the medieval city of Sibiu, is Castelul de Lut Valea Zânelor — which literally translates to "Clay Castle of the Valley of the Fairies." And no, that name is not an exaggeration. The moment you see it, you'll think someone photoshopped a fairy tale and dropped it into the Carpathian Mountains.
The whole thing was built by a Romanian couple who decided to ditch city life, move to the countryside, and build something completely out of the ordinary — using only natural materials like clay, sand, straw, and river stone. Started in 2014, finished in 2017. Just two people with a dream and a LOT of patience.
Fun facts:
The castle has 2 levels, 10 rooms, 2 towers, and 50 windows — and every single door frame and window frame is handmade from fir wood, each one completely unique.
The walls are 60cm thick, made from a mix of clay, straw, water, and sand. That's basically nature doing all the heavy lifting.
The foundation stone was laid on March 20, 2014 — the International Day of Happiness. How cute is that?

How to get there from Bucharest:
Castelul de Lut is about 280km from Bucharest — the easiest way is by car, which puts you there in roughly 3 hours. If you're not driving, take a train to Sibiu first, then grab a taxi or Uber for the last 40km stretch to Porumbacu de Sus village. Pro tip: make a whole road trip out of it — the castle sits right near the famous Transfăgărășan Road, one of the most scenic drives in Europe. You're welcome.
