Exploring the Hidden Gems in Kathmandu

Kathmandu is a city that amazes me with all its rooftop cafes and vibrant culture.

Kathmandu is a city of stories - and Thamel is my favorite one, where many of them begin.

Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal, is a city that hums with contrasts - ancient temples nestled beside modern storefronts, incense-scented alleys filled with motorbike buzz, and peaceful rooftop cafes perched above the colorful chaos below. If you're arriving in Nepal, chances are you'll find yourself in Thamel, the heartbeat of Kathmandu's tourist scene - and the perfect launchpad for your Himalayan adventure.

Why Thamel is my favorite?

Thamel isn't just a neighborhood; it's an experience. My Airbnb accommodation sits on the rooftop of a 6-storey commercial building in Thamel. It was an exciting experience! Minus the climbing up and down the stairs for 4 days, when I reach my room on the rooftop, it felt like magic. I feel like I'm one with the mountains. I like the bustling vibe of Thamel, it's like a maze of narrow streets packed with trekking shops, hostels, pashnima stores and tattoo parlors. It's noisy, energetic and a little chaotic - but that's exactly what gives it its charm. I remember one time, the rain suddenly started pouring and I was walking along the alleys, I somehow found a hidden gem tucked away somewhere in the center of Thamel. The coffee shop was cozy and has a lot of books, so I sat down and started reading one of the books.

Rooftop Cafes and Hidden Havens

Another surprising discovery and actually one of the best ways to take in the authentic Kathmandu vibes is from above. Rooftop cafes in Thamel are like little urban sanctuaries where you can escape the hustle and watch the city breathe. My favorites are the Himalayan Java Cafe which is actually the biggest coffee chain in Nepal, and the Third Eye Restaurant's rooftop. Some of these rooftop cafes double as garden cafes that give you the Boho feel with its potted plants, wooden chairs and fairy lights. There are also a lot of boutique hotels that offer rooftop terraces like Hotel Thamel House, Aloft Hotel and Karma Boutique Hotel.

When in Kathmandu, whether you're prepping for a trek, sipping masala tea at sunrise, or just soaking in the warm chaos, the Kathmandu vibes stay with you long after you leave.
